One of the newest concepts in home improvement is the use of outside blinds as sun blockers to reduce or eliminate the need for air conditioning. Some homeowners have foregone the use of draperies altogether, thus eliminating the need for deep cleaning the interior fabrics with chemicals and making the room less allergenic.

Europeans have embraced this concept not only in private homes, but in commercial buildings and hotels. One German manufacturer installs custom outside blinds to fit any design. Hotels often utilize an automated system that opens the blinds when a key unlocks the entrance door and closes them when the guests leave. The system also senses strong winds—over 35 miles per hour— and will retract automatically.

Everyone wants to have a beautiful home. Considering that it is probably the biggest purchase of your life and where you spend the most time, it’s easy to see why home improvement is such a big business. Unfortunately, it’s rarely cheap. Even remodeling a tiny bathroom can set you back several thousand dollars or more. So let’s take a look at the different options out there to pay for these improvements.

Home Equity Line of Credit: Known as HELOC for short, this is a line of credit which uses your home’s value as collateral. Because it is secured by the equity in your home, typically this type of loan has interest rates which are less than a non-secured loan (like a credit card). If you’re looking for 10 to 50k in financing, this is one way to go.

Refinance: Just like the name implies, this is where you replace your current mortgage with a new one. This benefits the consumer in a couple ways. First of all, if you can refinance to a lower interest rate, this in itself may be hundreds less than your current monthly payment. Secondly, if you got a mortgage years ago, a refinance allows you to cash out that equity you’ve already paid for – money you can use for whatever you want, including home remodeling.

Credit Cards: Most of the time, this is not a good idea. However, if you have the means and discipline to pay off the balance quickly (within 6 to 12 months) this is an option to consider. Why? Because a number of credit cards have 0% offers on purchases. Bank cards are more likely to offer you better deals for this, but there are also store cards like the Home Depot credit card which sometimes offer 0% promotions for up to 6 months. If you decide to go this route, be sure to use comparison tools like credit card reviews and ratings to find the longest offer possible.

Personal Unsecured Loans: Similar to a credit card, these usually aren’t available for high-dollar amounts since they’re not secured by collateral. For the same reason, they also typically carry high interest rates. Therefore, this is rarely (if ever) a good way to finance anything, let alone an optional home improvement project.

Payment Plans: Large stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t offer this, but some local mom and pop stores sometimes still offer payment plans to customers they trust. If the interest rate is reasonable, this is definitely a good option to consider. However due to the recent economic problems, it will be especially hard to find stores that offer this.

Reality TV: Yes, this is definitely a far-fetched option, but if you have a great story you may be able to get on Extreme Makeover or another similar show. Typically, the people featured on these shows pay nothing for remodeling. Now some of the cable channel shows do require participants to absorb some of the costs, but often the contractors are more than happy to cut a deal since it’s an excellent publicity opportunity.

Building sustainable decking solutions tends to be a large challenge, because it means trying to get the materials involved in the decking to do what they are not naturally meant to do, including lasting for many years without requiring a great deal of maintenance. Most of the methods that are commonly used to accomplish the maintenance required by decking are actually rather harmful to the environment and therefore are not solutions at all. Even some apparently ecologically sound materials cannot hold up under scrutiny. On the other hand, some solutions that appear to be destructive to the environment can provide a much more sustainable solution.

As far as sustainable decking solution goes, natural wood decking comes with advantages that you will not find with any other decking materials. Wood is non toxic, and is extremely strong considering how light it is in weight. Wood is also easy to work and has a beautiful appearance. Wood is a completely renewable resource as long as it is managed intelligently, and wood can be produced with a comparatively small input of fossil fuels, especially if the wood products are brought it from local forest sources. Wood is also easily reused and recycled, and it can biodegrade easily without creating any pollutant byproducts.

The one problem that is associated with wood deckling springs from one of its advantages. The natural biodegradable nature of the wood is to return to the soil where it comes from, because of weather, mold, bacteria and insect activity. In order to delay these effects from occurring, it is vital to use wood products that have rot resistance in them naturally. Some of these wood products include native redwoods and cedars, and imported tropical hardwoods such as ipe or ironwood and teak.

Wood that is naturally rot resistant can be really wonderful, but these woods are more difficult to find and have become more expensive as a result. This fact forces people to search for alternatives that are most cost effective, such as decking options that are constructed from softwoods that are less rot resistant and cheaper, but that are pressure treated using chemicals as a means of inhibiting the decay. The depth of the treatment is what determines the degree that the wood can be rot resistant. The decking materials can retain the same strength as natural wood and can be finished with a variety of different stains and other treatments that inhibit decay and add to the natural beauty of the wood.

In the past, standard wood preservatives were Pentachlorophenol, Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) and Creosote, but these are all extremely toxic and poisonous treatments. These chemicals are beginning to see replacement by Copper Azone (CA) and Amine Copper Quat (ACQ) which are far safer results but still far from being truly benign.

First of all, what is a mortgage?
A mortgage is the transfer of an interest in property (or the equivalent in law - a charge) to a lender as a security for a debt - usually a loan of money.
In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans secured on real estate rather than on other property (such as ships) and in some jurisdictions only land may be mortgaged.

Here in the United States, in all but a few states, a mortgage creates a lien on the title to the mortgaged property. Foreclosure of that lien almost always requires a judicial proceeding declaring the debt to be due and in default and ordering a sale of the property to pay the debt.

How do we obtain a mortgage? First we need to find a lender.
A mortgage lender is an investor that lends money secured by a mortgage on real estate.
When shopping for a mortgage lender it is important to become educated on mortgage rates.
What are mortgage rates?
A mortgage rate is the interest rate that a consumer pays to obtain a mortgage or borrow funds from a lender to purchase his or her home.
There are many different types of mortgage rates, but there are two types of rates that the most common.

First, there is the fixed mortgage rate. The most common of these is the thirty year fixed rate. The advantage of the fixed mortgage rate is that it will create predictable housing costs for the life of the loan.
Second, there are the adjustable rate mortgages. These rates are popular for those that impacted by high interest rates and short-term homeownership.

When looking for a home mortgage, shop around and do your homework in finding the best home mortgage rate.

My grandmother used to tell me that her grandmother told her that during her grandmother’s times, people never used to lock their homes at night or when they went on a holiday. I know the above sentence doesn’t make any sense but what I actually meant to say is that there was a time people didn’t have to live in perpetual fear of being robbed, raped, maimed or killed in their own homes. People didn’t need to worry about somebody breaking into their homes and taking away their hard earned stuff.

This sounds almost utopian to people like us in the 21st century where we live in a state of constant fear and worry. People like us have to worry about a lot of things other than the major world issues like poverty, terrorism, global warming, the occasional hurricanes and the tsunamis. Come to think of it, we have so many immediate worry factors right at home, things like terrorism and global warming and all that are best left to the politicians who have security guards protecting their lives and possessions 24 hours a day.

What is the most important thing that we consider worth protecting and guarding with all means available? The answer would be our homes and families for every one of us, barring an enlightened few who would rather worry about who is going to win the next super bowl or if the Dalai Lama will reincarnate in America. For most of us, the lives of our loved ones are the most precious and the pain of losing someone or losing something of ours that was bought or got by our hard work is unbearable. Things are so bad that we need to check if the house is locked a thousand times each time we step out of the house. When we are in the house then we worry about our cars parked outside. This constant state of fear and suspicion can make the weaker among us into total nervous wrecks.

The above reasons are enough to make us run and get the best security systems available in the market for our homes. If there are some guys out there who think what can home security systems do that we cannot do ourselves then my answer to them is, for starters, they can be at home protecting it when we are not there. There are so any good security and surveillance systems today right from the budget ones that record the movements around the vicinity of our homes to real hi tech and expensive ones that can deter even the hardest of burglars. From simple burglar alarms to sophisticated surveillance systems, there are whole assortments of security systems that can put a dampener on any criminal’s plans.

You can get a whole range of camera security systems that include types like dome cameras, Bullet Cameras, Board Cameras, Security Monitors and Security Recorders and computer based systems. Security devices are available not only to monitor burglary but some of them even have built in provisions that can warn you in the event of a fire happening or if there is a leakage in your gas plumbing lines. Home security has never had it so good and my only regret now is that I wish my grand mom was alive to see the range of security gadgets we have today. I am sure that would have made the great lady real happy.

There are few occurrences quite as costly and potentially catastrophic to homeowners as water damage. Something as simple as an overflowing toilet or a burst pipe could have very serious consequences, ranging from damage to the home itself that may cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair, to the potential health hazards of the mold growth that can accompany water damage. The effects of water damage can be far-reaching indeed, wreaking havoc on flooring, drywall, ceilings and roofs, furniture and upholstery, and valuables including fabrics, papers and photographs. When it comes to water damage, the best solution is prevention. Learn what the warning signs are and how to cope with them and you’ll be well equipped to protect your home from the devastation of water damage.

While water damage has the potential to occur in virtually any internal or external area of the home, it most commonly afflicts one of three rooms: The bathroom, the kitchen and the laundry room. These rooms tend to have the most plumbing and therefore the greatest risk of leaks and floods. To begin, each of these rooms should be regularly inspected for preliminary signs of water damage and leaks. In the bathroom, inspect the tub or shower, sink and toilet. Are they properly sealed and caulked? Are the tiles in the shower area cracked, broken or missing? Are the pipes old or rusty? Next, move on to the kitchen. Pay special attention to the dishwasher, refrigerator and sink. Again, keep an eye on the pipes, and look at the floor for any signs of discoloration, warping or moisture. Finally, in the laundry room, focus on the washing machine, water heater, and air conditioning unit. Are the hoses on your appliances strong and securely in place? Is your water heater old and in need of replacing? Remember, water heaters aren’t built to last forever – you’ll need to replace yours every 15 years or so to keep it in top condition.

After you’ve inspected these water damage hot spots, move on to the rest of the house. Look for any dark spots or softness on the floors, walls and ceilings that could be indicative of moisture. Check the caulking on your windows and doors in order to ensure that rainwater, ice and snow can’t find their way inside. In addition, take note of any areas that have a musty, unpleasant odor that may indicate the presence of mold or mildew. In addition to acting as a strong indicator of water damage, mold can also have health implications for you and your family, including respiratory problems, headaches, and dizziness. If you find mold in your home, contact a mold remediation professional immediately to have it removed safely and thoroughly.

Remember, the biggest mistake you can make when it comes to water damage is ignoring it. Don’t be caught unprepared; instead, take steps to safeguard your home by learning how to prevent water damage.

One of largest home improvement projects homes undergo is replacing the doors in order to update the look and efficiency of the largest energy waster in the house. Doors that are drafty, or not fitted properly, are not energy efficient .

There are several types of doors to use when remodeling. There are energy efficient doors, fiberglass doors, french doors, sliding doors, steel doors, and storm doors. All have benefits for the homeowner and all have different different functions.

Energy efficient doors provide tremendous savings on utility bills and save energy. The basis for using the energy door is to reduce the drafts and create a better seal around the door from the elements. This helps to reduce the utility bills during both the summer and winter months. They are available in different styles and colors, allowing the homeowner many options.

Fiberglass doors are lightweight while providing energy efficiency. They have similar benefits of the energy efficient door listed above while also providing more styles such as wood grain that is very appealing and compliments any décor. They also provide a lower cost to the consumer.

French doors are a classy touch to any entranceway. While adding an elegant touch they also provide maximum views. There are different styles that include either clear glass or etched glass. The preference is up to the homeowner. The French doors can be installed as a single unit or in pairs; either way, this creates a beautiful addition to the home. They are usually installed in the patio area providing a grand view of the backyard.

Sliding doors make a great entrance for any patio. They glide gently on a track and can be opened or closed with elbows when the hands are full. They are durable and very practical since they do not require any painting, minimizing the need for maintenance in the future. They provide the option of being left open when having to return to the kitchen or dining area while barbequeing in the backyard. One of the best options available is the safety glass, which prevents any accidental hazards if a person slips and falls against the glass.

The steel doors are extremely durable and offer maximum protection from the elements. They are sturdy and provide a high level of security. They are also very energy efficient. They come in many styles and colors and add beautiful changes in appearance to any home.

Storm doors add additional beauty to the home with additional security features. By adding a deadbolt to the door, a homeowner creates a higher level of security to the fortress. They can be used with any door at any location throughout the house, except the sliding door. They come in many different styles and colors.

The different doors all add great options for changing the look of any home. Based on the homeowners’ preferences, each one can be just the right touch to any remodeling project.
